TEHACHAPI, Kern County — October 27, 2026. A local effort to keep spending inside Tehachapi brought measurable participation this summer. The city’s Shop Local Stay-cation campaign distributed 1,375 gift cards valued at approximately $14,500 over eleven weeks, according to the city’s August 19 final results announcement.
How the program worked
Starting June 1, participants could present receipts totaling at least $250 in purchases at participating businesses within the City of Tehachapi at designated city locations. They then qualified for a gift card from another local business, subject to the program’s rules and supply.
The city said it bought 1,171 ten-dollar cards from local businesses and received another 204 donated cards valued from $10 to $20. More than 50 local businesses and nonprofit organizations participated in the campaign.
Who took part?
The final announcement counted 590 cards going to incorporated Tehachapi residents (about 43%), 706 to residents of unincorporated Tehachapi-area communities (about 51%), and 81 to people from outside the local 93561 area (roughly 6%). Those are gift-card distribution totals, not unique-customer counts or independently audited sales revenue.
Can shoppers still claim a card?
No: the city says the last gift card was distributed on August 13. This story is a retrospective about the 2026 program’s outcomes, not a current offer. Residents should not bring new receipts expecting a card unless the city separately announces another round.
What the numbers do—and do not—show
The program connected purchases at one local establishment with spending at another. The distributed card totals show civic engagement and promotional reach, but they do not establish exactly how much additional spending the program generated beyond purchases that would otherwise have occurred. The city did not report a controlled economic-impact study in the announcement.
